Flicka Destiny

Jeffrey Frederick told Destiny's story in Flicka Friends #39 (Summer 2006). He found her advertised in a regional boating magazine, two hours away on the Oregon coast and sitting on her trailer — the first Flicka he had ever seen in person. She had a nearly new inboard diesel with under five hours on it, the open interior rather than the enclosed head, and, to his surprise, wheel steering. For two seasons he sailed her out of Fern Ridge Reservoir near Eugene, on hot, puffy nights under stars and moon and through spring storms of 35 knots and square, choppy seas.

When the winds of change blew him east in July 2005 she went overland rather than by sea, from Portland, Oregon to Piermont, New York: five days of driving at 55 mph with his father alongside, on a 1981 double-axle EZ Loader fitted with an equalization package. Bearings began running hot on the fourth day and had to be greased every fifty miles for the last leg. The crossing cost about $3,000 all told, some $1,000 of it in trailer repairs — four bearings, brakes and tires — once she reached the coast. As he wrote in 2006 he was sailing her from a mooring at Piermont, on the Hudson River estuary, though she was usually launched and retrieved from her trailer at a ramp.
