By Dave Arnold Last April, I purchased a 1979 Flicka 20, and have been working on her ever since to prepare her for next year's season. Recently renamed s/y MARGALIT, she is kept on Carter's Creek at Rappahannock Yachts in Irvington, VA. My goal is to get her ready for the next boating season. While she is being refitted, s/y MARGALIT is very much ready to sail on the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay. She is a work in progress and a number of projects have already been completed. By Tom Davison In September, Daryl and I discussed the class newsletter Flicka Friends. We agreed that I would take on the role of editor again and begin publishing Flicka Friends beginning with the spring issue of 2013. This issue of Flicka Friends is the latest edition of the class newsletter. Since a photo gallery issue is easy to create, I decided to start early with a Winter 2012 Issue. My plan for the Spring 2013 issue of Flicka Friends is to create the largest newsletter to date. With your assistance, I’d like to create a number of regular articles about the Flicka: Flicka Friends Cover - A high megapixel digital image of your Flicka can make a great cover. Framing your shot vertically will eliminate cropping. For cover shots, don’t frame your shot tightly, leave some room for the Flicka Friend masthead and some text at the bottom of the cover page. Flicka Dining - Just about everywhere you go, eating good food enhances the trip and brings everyone together. This column will outline a favorite pizza parlor or fine 4

restaurant that you find while cruising. The first one of these articles will be about a small restaurant in San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Flicka Passages - Be it short or long, if you have a story about a trip aboard your Flicka, please send some photos and a story. I’m sure that everyone would enjoy hearing about your time aboard your Flicka. Flicka Photo Gallery - For Flicka owners that do not want to create an article for the newsletter, a digital photo and a caption describing the scene, the location, what the image shows. Please include your Flickas hull number, name, year, and related owner information. With enough interest and a steady flow of images, I’d like to expand the Photo Gallery into a separate newsletter for Flicka Friends and publish it on a slightly different quarterly schedule. This issue is an example of what can be created with twenty to thirty photos. Most of the work was accomplished in three or four days.

Flicka Ports of Call - This could be your home port or one of your favorites in your local waters, or a marina from of trip. Flicka Profile - This section will highlight a single Flicka. It will include a number of photos and information about the Flicka and the sailing history. For anyone wishing to sell their Flicka, this could be a good way to share information and photographs about their favorite Flicka. Flicka Projects - Any project about or having to do with the Flicka. There are two such articles in this issue. One is about a custom lower hatch board, the other is about relocating the fuel cut-off into the cockpit. Flicka Rendezvous - A Flicka Rendezvous held in your local waters would be a great addition to the newsletter. They can be anything from two Flickas heading to the same port to a large gathering of Flickas. The Long Island Sound Flicka Rendezvous is great example of a large gathering. The Flicka Friends publishing schedule will remain quarterly, with issues being published

in the spring, summer, fall and winter with the deadlines as follows: Issue

This newsletter will continue to be produced as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file and placed on the Flicka20.com website. Send an article - You would be surprised about what can become an article. After editing this newsletter for years, I have found that many people think they need to spend a huge amount of time writing an article.

In fact, just about anything from a simple email story to a detailed how-to project can become an great article. If you send in a few images, you add quite a bit to the story. In these days of digital cameras and blogs, sending something is much easier than when this newsletter was first publishing in the middle 1990s. If anyone has taken a longer trip, built a Flicka, or completed a major refit, an entire issue could dedicated to their story. Publishing a series of articles across several issues would also be possible. Send a photo - A photo or two can help with the Photo Gallery Issue of Flicka Friends. Only thirty photos were required for this issue of Flicka Friends. Please add a short caption and include the location of the photo and the name of the photographer.

So far, five Flicka captains have stepped forward with articles that will be published in the Spring 2013 issue of Flicka Friends. Hopefully, this will establish a trend. This is a request for assistance, one that will hopefully result in receiving a number of articles and images for every issue. Without your assistance, there will be very little to publish and few issues to read.
