Flicka Nomad

Bill Hogan and Saba sailed Nomad south from California to Mexico, reaching La Paz after six weeks out of San Diego. Flicka Friends #48 (Winter 2012) shows her at the docks there, running solar and wind power for everything aboard including the outboard, and #54 (Fall 2013) carries Hogan's account of the 900-mile run down to Cabo San Lucas and around into the Sea of Cortez. Her auxiliary on that trip was a four-horsepower electric outboard, and Hogan had replaced the stock tiller with a shorter one to make room in the cockpit — advice he passed on in #62 (Winter 2015).

The most exciting and difficult day of the voyage, as Hogan tells it, was 10 April in the Cerralvo Channel, written up as "The Last Thing You Check" in #54. A squall the weather station logged at thirty-six knots caught them under sail out of Bahia de Los Muertos; Nomad was knocked down past forty-five degrees, still making better than five knots, and then lost all electrical power. With the anchorage at Playa Bonanza untenable, they short-tacked into a cove behind Punta Lobos in the dark and anchored under sail on 180 feet of chain. Once anchored, Hogan quickly found the fault: the master switch at the foot of the companionway steps, stepped on in the heat of battle.

She stayed in Baja afterwards, laid up in a yard at La Paz, and was there for the hurricane. Flicka Friends #63 (Spring 2015) reports her mast snapped off at the crosstrees by a neighbouring boat blown off its stands; otherwise the damage was cosmetic, and she was one of the few boats in that yard left standing.
