Flicka Maritime

Maritime, hull #426, was built for Robert and Twila Robinson of Juneau, Alaska — five years in the planning, nine months in the building and thirty days for rigging, as they told Flicka Friends #4 (Spring 1996). They sailed her home from Seattle up the Inside Passage, clearing customs at Bedwell Harbour and beating sixteen hours across the Strait of Georgia with the decks awash before reaching Pender Harbour. She arrived in Juneau twenty-five days out of Seattle with nearly a thousand miles under her keel.

The Robinsons then took her to Glacier Bay, leaving Juneau on 4 May for the three-week cruise described in Flicka Friends #7 (Winter 1997). Being only twenty feet on deck, Maritime could lie at the Bartlett Cove dinghy dock, and the ice let her within half a mile of Reid Glacier. They anchored in North Sandy Cove and Fingers Bay, found Shag Cove in Geikie Inlet too deep to anchor and drifted there while they watched mountain goats on the hillsides, and tied to a floathouse in Blue Mouse Cove under the eye of the biggest black bear they had ever seen; a female moose made a short appearance, and one evening the wolves began to serenade them.

In 1999 Shin and Miwa Kurata bought Maritime and shipped her from Seattle to Yokohama in a cradle aboard the cargo ship World Spirit, loading on 13 July. She was trucked to Yokohama Bay Side Marina on 6 August, launched on the 12th and first sailed on Tokyo Bay on 28 August; the Kuratas thought about a Japanese name and decided to keep her own. By 2005 she was kept at the Yokohama Bay Side Marina, one of three Flickas then sailing on Tokyo Bay (Flicka Friends #35, Summer 2005), and the warm water there calls for an annual haul, scrub and two coats of bottom paint — a three-day job Shin Kurata wrote up in Flicka Friends #36 (Fall 2005).
